Once the incised decoration is complete, the leather hard beaker is covered in a layer of black slip. This traditional Japanese process of slip inlay is called "Mishima".

Once the beaker has dried again to the leather hard state, I wipe the surface of the pot with a damp natural sea sponge. This removes the black slip from the surface, but not from the incised drawing. The result is a decorative surface quality much like an engraving.
